How I Barely Survived the Holidays
It's January 1st, 2009. In the last two weeks, I've survived an unexpectedly complex Christmas Eve service, arranged for another sound tech to fill in for me at the last minute, fixed the CD recorder, and had the scariest audio nightmare! read more »

Rock Concert Or Humble Hymns?
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I heard my brother-in-law's wife make the comment that she didn't like a church she visited because it was like a rock concert with everyone having their hands in the air. She's in her late twenties; a person you would think would be at a mega-church and singing worship songs. However, because of how she was raised, she loves singing hymns. She likes a piano, a choir, maybe another instrument but in short, simple. I could pro read more »

A Sound Tech's Christmas Story
Just a little something I wrote. Hope you enjoy...
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the building
Not a monitor was humming, no signal lights blinking;
The speakers were hung by the ceiling with care,
We'd hoped that St. Gear-man soon would be there; read more »

What's On Your Christmas Audio List?
Christmas is around the corner. I have my own wish list of the audio stuff I'd love to add at my church...and I'll reveal it in an upcoming interview. For now, let me know what audio or video equipment you'd place on your wish list. Have fun with this! For clarity, "an understanding worship leader" is a valid gift. People get puppies for Christmas so why not a worship leader? read more »

Luke, I am Your Father's Sound Guy
You've probably seen the personality tests on the internet that align you with a character from a movie, like Lord of the Rings. The characters in Star Wars (the old movies, not the new ones) have such iconic personalities, that they can be matched up to the type of sound tech that you are. Which one sounds like you? read more »

New Audio-Technica Honest Elite Wireless Mic
The Audio-Technica Artist Elite 5000 microphone has been used at the Presidential And VP Debates. What if Audio-Technica built a wireless microphone not only worthy of presidental appeal but that was also music to the listener's ear? I'd called it the Honest Elite 5000. Without going into who is right or wrong in the current debates, imagine if you will... read more »

This Is Your Brain On Music
I stumbled on this book about a year ago. I was out-of-town and happened into the local public library. I came across the book "This is Your Brain on Music" and was immediately excited about it after reading just part of the first chapter. The next time I was at my local bookstore, I tried to find the book but couldn't remember the name of it! Today, I found it. read more »

700 Mega Hertz of Misery
Thanks first to Church Tech Arts blog for covering this news bit on the FCC's proposal to ban 700 mHz wireless microphones . If you have wireless mics in the 700 MHz band, specifically from 698-806 MHz, you have six months to replace them or go wired...if the proposal passes.
I did a bit of research on the best selling wireless microphones from musiciansfriend.com and here's a list of the top wireless microphones and their frequency ranges ... read more »
