Why I Love Being A Sound Tech
From time to time, I rant a little on this site about the annoyances of the job. This morning, I felt I should post the reasons I love being a sound tech.
1. I can use my God-given talents for the benefit of the church body.
2. I love creating organization out of chaos which can occur from time to time.
3. I love solving problems. And if any problem is going to occur on a Sunday morning, it’s going to be with the sound system.
4. Sitting in the booth, I see eye-level with the pastor. I feel it makes the sermon more personal.
5. Worship team members are confident about the house sound when they know I’m talking care of them that morning.
6. I DO know what all those knobs do.
7. I get a reserved seat in the best location in the sanctuary!
8. I can teach others about live audio production.
9. I can teach musicians how they can make changes which improve their sound.
10. I love mixing music. I might not be doing a 50,000 attendee concert or mixing a recording, but I am mixing for a group of people.
11. I’m always learning new information so my skills are always improving.
12. It keeps me humble. Messing up as the sound tech, means all eyes turn to me.

I'm Chris Huff and I've been working behind a mixer for over twenty years. Since 2008, I've been helping other sound techs learn all about the art of church audio through behindthemixer.com.
For more about me,
I can’t sing and I haven’t played an instrument in 20 years, but I am the one who balances everyone else so they all sound good and if they make me mad I just turn them off. hehehe
1) I love music,
2) I love working with a team of sound techs,
3) I love the tingle of 9v on the tongue :P
It’s a wonder that’s not a reality show: 9V Rehab. "At first, he said that’s how he tested the batteries for the wireless microphone. Then one day, I caught him doing it at home in the back yard. Then last week, I found a stack of new 9-volts behind his shaving kit."
so glad i’m not the only one with the 9v fetish.
Overheard: Pastor: “I’m not saying another word until you fix the sound problem with my mic!”
I love being a sound tech becuase it ads to the whole worship exprience. When it is done right, it sets the atmosphere for worship and praise and learning. And plus I love being in control…lol.
I can serve God and do the stuff I love at the same time!
Thanks for reminding us about the good side of working A/V.
I’ve been struggling a lot lately with the bad side of it.
We have a lot of problems, but I love sound engineering and I love solving problems, and I just need to keep reminding myself of that.
Just what I needed, oh, and I also have like 6-7 teenagers as volunteers. God put it in their hearts to volunteer, now it looks like a little class for techs. But they’re awesome and learning fast. God Bless, I’ll share this with them too.
Man you covered most everything.
But I love when you finally get that last volume or tone controlled, apply the finishing reverb to a violin, or find that perfect groove for a background instrument where you can hear it just right….
Probably noone else in the congregation has any clue what you just did, but I like to think of it as part of my worship – creating a sweet sound before the Lord :)
