Review: Furman PL-8 II Power Conditioner

Topics: Electrical power, Gear Reviews, power By: Chris Huff September 20, 2008

One split second.  That’s all the time it takes to fry your electrical equipment.  If you are like me, you spent countless hours searching for just the right piece of equipment to add to your sound system.  Perhaps that equipment was a new mixer or new amplifier.  Then you searched high and low for the best price.  There is one piece of equipment, however, you might be lacking in your sound system…and you don’t even know it.

A surge suppressor (a.k.a “surge protector”) is a device inserted in the alternating current (AC) line to prevent damage to electronic equipment from voltage “spikes.”  A typical surge suppressor is a box with several utility outlets, a power switch, and a 3-wire cord for plugging into a wall outlet.  A surge suppressor is the shield that guards your equipment.

The Furman PL-8 II Power Conditioner protects your equipment from voltage spikes and provides clean, noise-free AC power. The PL-8II utilizes Furman’s Series Mode Protection (SMP) circuit and Linear Filter Technology (LiFT).

Traditional surge suppression circuits “sacrifice” themselves when exposed to multiple voltage spikes.  This requires replacement or repair. Not so with SMP used in the Furman Surge Suppressor. Damaging voltages are safely absorbed, clamped and dissipated. In cases of extreme transient voltages the PL-8 II safely shuts itself, and everything connected to it, down.

LiFT ensures optimal performance through linear filtering and no leakage to ground. Traditional AC conditioners could harm audio performance more than they help, often adding more than 10 dB of noise to the incoming AC line. The PL-8 II also guarantees zero leakage of AC power to ground.

The Furman PL-8 II Power Conditioner includes 8 back-panel outlets and 1 front outlet.  Additionally, it comes with two LED rack lights.  LED lights produce virtually no heat so you aren’t creating a heat source by using them.

One user, Steve H., said of the Furman, “I replaced some old surge protectors with a few of these things in my racks (live theatre).  They took a savage hit the other day with no ill effects. They probably saved me a couple hundred thousand dollars.”

A surge suppressor might be the last thing you think about concerning your sound equipment.  It should probably be the first.  Check out the Furman PL-8 II Power Conditioner .
