I was taking a flurry of notes throughout the Gurus of Tech 2013 conference last week. Much like the previous post where I mentioned gold nuggets of church audio tips, today it’s gold nuggets of wisdom direct from the speaker’s mouth. Only this time, it’s primarily about your work in church technical arts production.
These quotes should be accurate. If you said it but see I missed a word here or there, please correct me. I could only write so fast!
1. Todd Elliot on the purpose of great production teams;
“To create life-changing moments through the fusion of technical and creative arts.”
2. Lincoln Brewster on why he plays on the worship team and works in the tech arts;
“The end game is that people will come to know Christ.”
3. Lincoln on needing a purpose for what you do;
“Work without purpose is unsustainable.”
4. Todd on your purpose and getting others to understand you;
“Your family needs a vision of what [you] do in technical ministry.”
5. Lincoln on working with creatives (musicians);
“Don’t think, ‘they need to be like me.'”
6. Andrew Stone on working with creatives;
“I have never been told, ‘just do it.’ There is a vision and [we are] working towards it.”
7. Andrew on dealing with disagreements before the service;
“Save the arguments for Monday.”
8. Andrew on tech production;
“Never forget you are serving.”
9. Whitney George on keeping your fire alive in tech production;
“Never stop being impressed.”
10. Dennis Choy on working with creatives;
“Don’t be a dream killer.”
11. Steve Carter on what techies do;
“[You] create the environment / set the tone for people to encounter Christ.”
12. Wes Wakefield on hitting hardware to make it work;
“Once is maintenance, twice is abuse.”
13. Wes on mixing;
“Fundamental mixing techniques win every time.”
14. Robert Scovill on drum kit mic’ing;
“Overheads [mic’s] are NOT cymbal mic’s, they are drum kit mic’s.”
14. Robert on general mixing;
“Mixing is the summation of 1 million small moves.”
15. Curtis Templeton on the necessity of TD’s to be shepherds to their team;
“Take up the staff!”
Any quotes you would add?
Curtis Templeton – “A shepherd has to be with their sheep and smell like their sheep.”
“All the video jokes I found looked great, but sounded terrible.” LB :)
Todd Elliott “Great production teams aren’t more talented, just more tenacious.”
Jared, those were great! It was fun having lunch with you at Portillos.
