Know Your Microphone Properties and Be More Creative

Topics: microphones By: Chris Huff December 6, 2018

Don’t assume there are only two different types of microphones; vocal and instrumental. Chris Huff and Brian Gowing explain how microphones are different, why they’re different, and how to pick the right one for your need. They also talk about creative miking solutions for kids choirs, drums, cajons, and how microphone placement on an amplifier can affect the tone.

Good information on different microphone patterns. I agree it’s important to continue learning about mic placement. Great tips.

    Hi Chris and Brian!

You inspired me with your story (at 20:25) where you two used a dynamic microphone for a piano due to a feedback situation.

I have a similar situation: a grand piano mic’ed with a condenser microphone. I love the sound from this piano-mic combination, but unfortunately I’m getting some feedback through this mic.

I’m going to try putting a spare SM57 on this piano. However, I’ll keep the condenser at the piano, too, and use it just for the livestream. I’ll put the SM57 and the condenser on a VCA I’ll label “piano” and route the SM57 to the room and the condenser to the livestream. It may or may not work well, but it’ll be fun to try.

    Thanks for the inspiration!
